The successful candidate will be a key part of the operations team and will be responsible for project managing new Amazon Fulfillment Centers planning, design and construction. This will include the extension of existing facilities and any new sites. The Construction Manager will play an integral role in the development and implementation of the EU network infrastructure. This role will analyze and evaluate different facility scenarios and build-out designs. It also includes standardization of the technical and facility related processes and systems. The opportunity combines construction engineering, planning, project management, facilities management, and contract management. It requires a person who can show proven ability in the planning and design, and project management / control of new and the enhancement of existing facility buildings. The role is based in DEU with approximately 50% travel across the EU/EMEA regions.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee construction engineering, planning, and design for Amazon Fulfillment (Distribution) Centers and other new or expansion projects
  • Provide project support on new fulfillment network buildings and additional capacity requirements within existing European Fulfillment Centers
  • Undertake construction engineering design on new and remodel projects
  • Prepare reports, specifications, and technical analyses to define design requirements, equipment, and services
  • Survey facilities, develop procedures to audit the facility, provide evaluations and analyses, and recommend solutions for facility infrastructure, safety and security
  • Negotiate contracts with vendors and present formal documentation for approval when required
  • Ensure contracts are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and include appropriate Service Level Agreements
  • Provide overall site management, coordination, planning, specification of proposals and coordination of subcontractors
  • Facilitate and collaborate on due diligence evaluations of new opportunities
  • Coach and guide project teams (sub-contractors, maintenance engineers, commissioning engineers) throughout the full project life cycle
  • Ensure contracted resources deliver work to meet duration and quality targets; address and correct under-performance issues
  • Audit contractors to verify skills and competencies are appropriate for the work
  • Inform contractors of projected changes in resource or work demand
  • Establish and operate information systems for scheduling and recording contract work
  • Support contractors’ work and help them achieve higher performance levels
  • Coach other team members on best practices

Team scope

The successful candidate will be a key part of the REI (Retrofits, Expansions and Initiatives) design and construction team. This includes extending existing facilities and upgrading the existing network. The Construction Manager will contribute to EU network infrastructure development and standardization of technical and facility-related processes and systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • B.Sc. in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Civil Engineering or Architecture, or country equivalent
  • Project management, construction or engineering experience with a proven track record of managing both new builds and enhancements of existing warehouses/logistics buildings
  • Construction market experience in one or more EU countries is a key asset
  • Project management experience from design phase through implementation and operation
  • Fluency in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience negotiating construction, procurement and labor contracts in EU
  • Proven track record in management of construction quality systems
  • Experience with Six Sigma and Lean analytical techniques
  • MRICS / RIBA qualified, or country equivalent
  • Chartered Engineer or country equivalent
  • French, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Afrikaans and Zulu language skills are considered plus
