Research Associate – Scale Interactions in a Warming Arctic (§ 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG)

The Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS) investigates climate dynamics and climate-related social dynamics, as well as the interactions between the two. We are looking for colleagues from a wide range of disciplines and proud to work together in a truly integrating manner. Our partners, for example the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Helmholtz Centre Hamburg, and the German Climate Computing Centre, are also hiring.

Responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project “Scale interaction in a warming Arctic” of the Excellence Cluster Climate, Climatic Change and Society. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications, and may pursue doctoral studies outside of working duties.

Successful candidates will carry out work within the project that quantifies the long‑term global impacts of the interactions between small‑scale surface heterogeneity and weather extremes in the Arctic. In particular, the candidate will compare how these interactions influence the response to global warming of permafrost, which has a rather long memory, and of sea ice, which has a rather short memory, by combining insights from large‑scale earth system modelling and observations.

Profile

  • A university degree in a relevant field.
  • An MSc in physical earth‑system science, physics or an adjacent field, and knowledge of a modern computer language is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of dynamical systems, permafrost and sea‑ice physics, and experience in the analysis of large‑scale earth system model output and remote‑sensing data are desirable.

Benefits

  • Reliable remuneration based on wage agreements.
  • Continuing education opportunities.
  • University pensions.
  • Attractive location.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Work‑life balance opportunities.
  • Health management, EGYM Wellpass.
  • Educational leave.
  • 30 days of vacation per annum.
