An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a leading design and build contractor working on major infrastructure frameworks in the UK water sector. This is a hybrid role offering flexibility and strong long-term career prospects, supporting the delivery of high-profile water and wastewater treatment projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the production of efficient, cost-effective mechanical design layouts that meet specifications and are constructible and commissionable.
- Consider whole-life costs of designs, including materials, construction, labour, and cross-discipline impact.
- Apply and promote standardised design practices to ensure efficiency and competitiveness.
- Provide technical input and estimation support for proposal teams.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of departmental processes and procedures.
- Ensure designs are fully coordinated with internal and external disciplines, promoting seamless project delivery.
- Maintain thorough documentation and records throughout the project lifecycle.
- Promote customer satisfaction and continuous improvement across all design and delivery functions.
- Support the personal development of junior team members through supervision and mentoring.
- Maintain a personal development plan and contribute to maintaining a safe and environmentally conscious working environment.
- Reduce waste and promote sustainability in all design outputs.
- Ensure all designs comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Essential
- Strong understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes.
- Proven experience leading or mentoring design teams within the water industry.
- HND or degree-qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (mechanical preferred).
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status with a recognised institution.
- Skilled in producing economical and practical plant layouts.
- Broad knowledge of water treatment systems, including mechanical, process, electrical, and project interfaces.
- Ability to manage multiple data inputs and present technical solutions clearly and confidently.
- Proficient in relevant engineering software and general computer literacy.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Masterβs Degree in an engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards.
- Experience working under long-term infrastructure frameworks or alliances.
