Full-time, On-site – Southampton

We’re partnering with an innovative scientific organisation to find an experienced Senior Scientist with deep expertise in Mass Spectrometry to join a high-performing team based in Southampton. This role offers the chance to lead analytical strategies, contribute to cutting-edge projects, and support the development of high-quality modified nucleic acid in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

About the Role

As the subject matter expert in mass spectrometry, you’ll play a central role in driving analytical method development, ensuring high standards in nucleic acid production, and mentoring junior team members. This is a hands-on role in a modern laboratory, where scientific excellence and operational efficiency go hand-in-hand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support small molecule preparation and oligonucleotide synthesis
  • Maintain, calibrate, and optimise analytical instrumentation in line with internal and ISO quality standards
  • Support and mentor Associate Scientists and Lab Technicians, providing technical guidance and training
  • Ensure high levels of documentation accuracy and data integrity
  • Uphold Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards and promote a safety-first culture
  • Manage the inventory of analytical reagents and consumables
  • Stay informed on emerging techniques in nucleic acid chemistry and analytical science

About You

We’re looking for a driven and detail-focused scientist who thrives in a collaborative lab environment and is passionate about pushing the boundaries of analytical science.

You’ll ideally have:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field
  • Significant hands-on experience with Mass Spectrometry, ideally including Waters LC-MS systems (Waters Connect experience highly desirable)
  • Proven track record in high-throughput chemistry or oligonucleotide production environments
  • Strong grounding in nucleic acid chemistry and experience with purification techniques
  • Experience working in ISO or GMP-regulated environments
  • Ability to lead projects and mentor junior staff
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving and organisational skills
  • A proactive mindset, able to adapt and perform under pressure
