Overview
We are seeking enthusiastic and visionary Consultants in Geriatric Medicine to help shape and grow our evolving older person services. This is a pivotal moment to join Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as we expand our front-door services and begin laying the foundations for a community-based model of care over the next 2-5 yearsβreflecting our commitment to delivering care closer to home.
Our Trust operates older person services across three sites: Winchester, Basingstoke, and Andover. We are currently looking for consultants who are particularly interested in working at the Basingstoke site, where exciting developments are underway. At Basingstoke, we provide care for older adults across 55 dedicated inpatient beds within three specialist wards: F1, F2, and F3. We have launched a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Basingstoke, which supports patients through our frailty virtual wards and works closely with community partners to ensure continuity of care beyond the hospital setting. We also operate a rehabilitation unit in Andover and are committed to strengthening liaison services across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking applicants with broad experience in Medicine, who demonstrate exceptional team-working skills and the leadership qualities needed to drive service development across the Trust. A commitment to education and lifelong learning is central to our values, with a supportive educational environment for trainees. We particularly welcome candidates with a passion for teaching and actively support applications for honorary teaching positions at our affiliated medical school in Southampton.
On-call
The post may include participation in a 1:16 on-call rota, which comprises:
- Evening post-take ward rounds on the unselected medical take
- Weekend on-call duties as first and second on-call , covering the unselected take and medical inpatients
- Overnight telephone advice , with return to site if clinically required
Participation in the on-call rota is remunerated with additional Programmed Activities (PAs) per week.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Internal Medicine or Geriatric Medicine , or be within six months of achieving this at the time of application. Please ensure that all training and employment dates are clearly listed on your CV or application form.
Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will lead a team of resident doctors and multidisciplinary staff in delivering high-quality care to inpatients, outpatients, and emergency admissions. You will work collaboratively within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in achieving national and local clinical and quality targets in partnership with commissioners and clinical colleagues. Person Specification
Research & Teaching skills β Essential:
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Awareness of current acute medical initiatives and developments
- Recent relevant clinical teaching experience within medical and allied disciplines
Desirable:
- Participation in research
- Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals
- Formal training in clinical supervision of junior doctors
- Other Educational formal qualification
- Experience in organising educational activities
- Formal training in Educational supervision of junior doctors
Professional Qualification β Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent
- Licence to practice and full registration with GMC
- MRCP (Paces)
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
- Advanced Life Support
- Eligible to work in the UK
Desirable:
- Post graduate degree (MSc/PhD)
Clinical Skills & Ability β Essential:
- Evidence of achievement of GMC Good Medical Practice standards
- Good team-working and multidisciplinary collaboration
- Good communication with children, parents, adults, and staff
- Good teaching and training
- Professional behaviour and probity
- Ability to work adaptably and manage different clinical areas as part of the on-call team

Clinical Experience & Knowledge β Essential:
- At least 6 months UK experience at middle grade/registrar level in one or more medical specialties
- Knowledge and experience of NHS
- Evidence of safe, sound clinical practices
Desirable:
- Previous Medicine experience at Consultant level
- Participation in audit and research
- Understanding of service improvement principles
Other Specific Requirements β Essential:
- Ability to understand local and national political agendas and respond accordingly
- Ability to plan strategically and demonstrate sound judgement
- Ability to lead, motivate and develop the multidisciplinary team
- Ability to organise work of self and team efficiently
- Evidence of engagement in clinical audit
