Principal Clinical Scientist (Radiation)

The Royal United Hospital in Bath is seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to work as a Medical Physics Expert within our Diagnostic Radiology Physics and Nuclear Medicine teams. The teams provide a range of high quality medical physics services to the Trust and external organisations and are an integral part of the Imaging Physics Group, which also includes Clinical Measurement services.

Job Overview

The Imaging Physics Group is a friendly team of clinical scientists, clinical technologists and administrators. It is highly committed to supporting both scientist and technologist trainees via the NHS STP scheme and a level 6 technologist apprenticeship programme. The vital importance of research, development and innovation is recognised and there is active involvement in clinical trials and various research projects both internally and with external partners.

Main Duties of the Job

You will be appointed as a Medical Physics Expert for Diagnostic Radiology and/or Nuclear Medicine. You will work with Clinical Consultants, Medical Physicists, Radiographers and Nuclear Medicine Technologists. You will provide scientific supervision and management to other scientists and apprentices in the Imaging Physics Group. The role requires detailed scientific knowledge and technical expertise in radiation physics and dosimetry and its application to healthcare, and you will provide advice to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors. You will also be responsible for developing and delivering appropriate training in radiation safety for Trust staff in line with Trust policy and legislation.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Good honours degree in Physics
  • Relevant MSc or higher degree
  • On RPA2000 List of Medical Physics Expert Certificate holders
  • HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physics)

Desirable Criteria

  • Certification as Radiation Protection Adviser

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of working in diagnostic radiology physics
  • Experience of working in nuclear medicine physics
  • Experience of successfully managing and motivating staff

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of developing and delivering training to other staff

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
