Overview
Applications are invited for this opportunity with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to provide clinical leadership across all aspects of Transfusion Medicine, including Patient Blood Management (PBM), Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI), and blood components. The successful candidate will offer expert PBM advice, support appropriate clinical use of blood and plasma products, and work collaboratively with consultants in transfusion medicine to advise NHSBT's Blood Supply Directorate, Regional Transfusion Committees, and wider clinical teams. The role also supports Quality Assurance in transfusion services and contributes to the development of national clinical policy, transfusion guidelines, and recommendations. The post includes participation in daytime and out-of-hours (telephone) on-call rotas for transfusion medicine, RCI, and components. Duties at Oxford Hospitals will be primarily based at the Iron Deficiency Management Service (IDMS), Bicester Community Hospital, with flexibility to work across Trust sites.
Responsibilities
- Lead PBM initiatives and support electronic transfusion decision tools in the EPR.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audits, and the development of transfusion guidelines.
- Provide patient blood management expertise and advice on appropriate blood and plasma products for clinical practice.
- Work with consultants in transfusion medicine to advise NHSBT's Blood Supply Directorate, Regional Transfusion Committees, and other clinical teams regionally and nationally.
- Support the Quality Assurance component of NHSBT’s transfusion work and participate in daytime and on-call rotas (by telephone) for transfusion medicine, RCI, and components.
- Support the development of national clinical policy and recommendations related to transfusion guidelines.
- Assist the red cell immunology laboratories and components teams as required.
Qualifications
- Essential: You must be on the GMC Specialist Register with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council or be eligible for specialist registration within 6 months of interview.
- Essential: Induction and post-CCT training in the specialist aspects of the role will be provided to candidates who can offer the essential core capabilities.
