CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Applications are invited for the above post for the Department of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Children's Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust with additional clinical duties in Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust.

We are an established team of 4 consultants, specialist nurses and physiotherapists, a senior clinical fellow and Deanery resident doctors, and a renowned Gait Laboratory. The service provides an elective Paediatric Orthopaedic service to the Oxford region, working closely with a multidisciplinary team, and developing the service further to support colleagues in regional hospitals across Thames Valley. We are looking for a colleague who can help us towards building this service further.

Potential candidates are invited to speak with the Clinical Director and the lead consultant, among others.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Children\'s Hospital, Oxford, with regular clinical activity at Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust (Stoke Mandeville and High Wycombe Hospitals). The post is available on a 10 PA job plan basis with 1:4 on-call commitment (no trauma).

Outline job plan weekly provision and provisional programmed activities will be agreed with the Clinical Director upon appointment and renegotiated annually.

• Provide high quality secondary and tertiary paediatric orthopaedic services to Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Thames Valley, and neighbouring counties.
• Support the multidisciplinary team and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
• Develop clinical collaboration with paediatric services in Oxford and Buckinghamshire to enhance paediatric orthopaedic provision.
• Develop paediatric training in orthopaedics with local and national Trainees and provide orthopaedic teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.

• Wednesday: 08:30-09:30 NOC; Case review & planning; 09:30-11:00 NOC; POAC Clinic; 11:00-17:00 NOC Clinic; DCC 1.85 PA
• Thursday: Travel to/from BHT; 09:00-14:00 BHT Clinic & admin; DCC 1.25 PA
• Friday: Travel to/from BHT; 08:00-18:00 OUH/Wycombe/Horton operating list; DCC 2.4 PA
• Saturday: 09:00-10:30 JR; 1 in 4 on call with ward round; DCC 0.13 PA
• Sunday: 08:00-09:00 JR; 1 in 4 on call with ward round; DCC 0.08 PA
• Additional flexible activities: admin, pre-op planning, core SPA and defined SPA alongside timetable as agreed
• Predictable emergency on-call work: On-call 1:4 weekends & weekdays

Qualifications and experience

Essential

• Full GMC licence to practice
• MBChB or equivalent
• FRCS (T&O) or equivalent
• Trained to level 3 safeguarding

Desirable

• Higher medical degree
• CCT or equivalent in orthopaedic surgery

Experience

Essential

• Comprehensive training in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery with fellowship experience at a major unit
• Ability to make consultant-level decisions and manage complex clinical problems

Desirable

• Experience as a paediatric orthopaedic consultant

Skills

Essential

• Leadership and ability to lead a clinical team
• Administrative and time management skills; training in clinical management
• Strong teamwork, teaching, and governance contributions
• Excellent written English, communication and interpersonal skills
• Involvement in teaching, training, clinical governance, risk management, and audits
• Participation in clinical research; GCP training or equivalent
• Ability to travel between hospitals

Desirable

• Experience in developing new services and leading their provision
• Management or education qualifications; national/international presentations and peer-reviewed publications
