Senior Fellow in Paediatric Intensive Care
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a fixed‑term contract commencing March 2026. The role is for Fellows (Registrar ST3+ equivalent) in Paediatric Intensive Care at Southampton Children’s Hospital, with a duration of 6 to 12 months.
No prior PICU experience is required, but a minimum of two years of paediatrics (including neonates), anaesthesia or intensive‑care medicine is essential.
Southampton PICU is a 16‑bed mixed unit admitting around 1,000 patients each year, a regional referral centre for Wessex and the combined Southampton Oxford retrieval team (SORT) service, moving around 500 critically ill children annually. The case mix includes cardiac, ECMO, neonatal, neurosurgical and a full range of general and paediatric sub‑specialty work. The role forms part of the tier 2 rota for PICU, which includes retrieval shifts. Full retrieval training is provided for those without paediatric transport experience. A comprehensive induction and training programme commences for all PICU staff.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide direct clinical care to PICU patients in collaboration with the PICU consultant team.
- Manage admission, stabilisation and ongoing care, including airway management and vascular access.
- Develop competencies needed for critical care transport; full training and support provided.
- Participate in governance and research projects.
Person Specification
Essential
- APLS or EPLS.
- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Appropriate knowledge base and sound clinical judgement.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in paediatrics, anaesthetics or intensive‑care medicine (ST1‑2 equivalent).
Desirable
- MRCPCH, FRCA or FFICM (any part of exams).
- NLS and/or ATLS.
- GIC (any course).
- POCUS qualification.
- Medical education qualification.
- Research qualification (GCP, MSc, MD, PhD).
- Experience in neonatal or paediatric anaesthesia.
- Experience in transport of critically ill patients.
- Previous PICU experience.
- Intubation experience and airway management skills.
- Advanced vascular access skills (CVC/arterial line).

- Effective team working in multi‑professional teams.
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning.

Additional Information
- Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed (non‑training fellow doctors and dentists).
