Job Description

The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving transformation in the energy sector, which is responsible for 24 % of UK GHG emissions. The Environment Agency is looking for a fixed‑term (up to 2 years) advisor with experience in regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical support and leadership through advice, guidance and training.
- Develop strategy and tools to support regulatory and environmental outcomes in the energy sector.
- Commission and manage external research projects where required.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, trade associations and other industry players.
- Respond to incidents and provide business‑continuity support as required.
Team
The role is part of the Energy & COMAH team within the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation (E&B) Directorate. Technical experts lead on defining sector standards and delivering best practice.
Qualifications & Experience
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and promote diversity.
- Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge of energy sector processes, including emissions control.
- Strong stakeholder management skills – operating with regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
- Team orientation – cooperation to achieve common goals.
