Overview

Development Director The Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) has for decades been recognized as one of the leading centers in the world dedicated to protecting the lives of workers. The center recently entered an exciting new era as Utah’s sole officially designated multi‑university partnership between the University of Utah and Weber State University. We have added academic programs and faculty, grown our student enrollment, and expanded our research portfolio—all bolstering our core mission of ensuring workers make it home, healthy and safe, each day.  

Responsibilities

  • Identifies major gift prospects, develops and executes plans, and solicits gifts in the five‑ to seven‑figure range.
  • Advises RMCOEH leadership on donor engagement strategies, communications priorities, and partnership opportunities.
  • Coordinates with RMCOEH leadership to align development strategies with center needs.
  • Identifies goals and objectives and reports progress to leadership.
  • Collaborates across interdisciplinary programs housed in the University of Utah and Weber State to identify philanthropic opportunities (endowed chairs, programmatic support, scholarships, research funding).
  • Works closely with the marketing team on donor‑related communications and strategies.
  • Builds and maintains internal relationships essential to advancing development activities.
  • Maintains high ethical standards and confidentiality of donor information.
  • Recognizes and stewards donors appropriately.
  • Plans and executes cultivation and acknowledgment events.
  • Analyzes market research and fundraising performance data.
  • Develops long‑term relationships with potential donors and maintains the prospect management system.
  • Ensures gifts are deposited correctly and reconciled with accounting.
  • Travels to meet potential donors, including occasional out‑of‑state travel.

Qualifications

  • Experience creating and implementing fundraising strategies targeting individuals and organizations, with a strong record of securing major gifts.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build and sustain relationships with prospective donors.
  • A degree in business, nonprofit management, or a related field; advanced coursework or experience in fundraising preferred.
  • Knowledge of occupational and environmental health and safety is a plus but not essential; passion for the mission is required.
  • Track record of collaborating with internal partners to translate donor interests into programmatic impact.
  • Strong analytical skills to use market research and data to inform solicitations.
  • Proficiency with donor management and accounting systems.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
