Overview
Lead Counsel 1- Services – Client Solutions
As part of the Client Solutions Team within Citi’s Services Legal department, the Assistant Vice President will primarily be engaged in a client-facing role comprising transactional work and broad-based advisory across Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services. This role manages day-to-day legal activities in coordination with the global Services Legal team and supports a wide range of transactional work related to account openings and product offerings across Citi Services.
The role provides exposure to a broad spectrum of products and services and requires regular interaction with Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services Legal and other functional colleagues to ensure coordination on legal and regulatory practices and procedures.
Reporting directly to the Legal Group Manager for Client Solutions in Tampa, the AVP will collaborate closely with the Business and with key areas across Citigroup, including other Legal areas, Compliance/ICRM and Risk.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel to the Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services businesses; participate in strategic initiatives; interpret applicable laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices; advise management on legal matters including negotiating documentation such as guarantees, account control, and confidentiality agreements.
- Partner with the Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services Legal teams to evaluate business proposals by analyzing documentation and applying institutional knowledge and risk appetite against industry standards, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines, escalating as appropriate.
- Collaborate across internal lines of business, control/support functions, and external counsel to achieve coordinated outcomes; coordinate with the Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services Legal teams on a regional and global basis.
- Assist the team in identifying, evaluating, and contributing to the management of legal, regulatory, and reputational risk by collaborating with ICRM & Risk, staying updated on relevant legal developments, participating in internal projects, and escalating as appropriate.
- Manage day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert in Payments, Liquidity, Trade, Investor, and Issuer Services; provide advisory services to internal stakeholders and support business projects, including regulatory and cross-border matters.
- Monitor management of complex legal issues and transactions, escalating when necessary.
- Assess risk when business decisions are made, safeguarding Citi’s reputation, clients and assets by driving compliance with laws and regulations, adhering to policy, applying ethical judgment, escalating and reporting control issues, and supervising and holding others accountable for standards.
Qualifications
- 2-5 years of relevant industry experience, preferably in financial services.
- Banking or financial industry experience, including laws related to banking regulations.
- Knowledge of international laws, regulations, and practices; staying current on regulatory and legal environment, internal policies, and industry trends that impact the business.
- Experience with complex deals; ability to analyze issues and develop legal solutions.
- Effective communication and negotiation skills; ability to build and maintain trusted relationships.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and relationship management skills.
- Proven ability to apply sound judgment in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
- Bar license in good standing to practice law.
Education
Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree.
