Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet the specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) may be appointed under certain conditions; PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis, and are not considered independent practitioners.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Eligibility for EDRP, if applicable, as described in the summary.
  • Physical requirements: standing or walking for a major portion of the workday; ability to perform standing, walking, twisting, turning, sitting, bending, pushing, carrying, and light lifting.

Duties

  • Maintain Internal Medicine board certification; if board certified, meet CME requirements and participate in resident/student training.
  • Arrive on time to medical wards to engage in patient rounds and patient care huddles to improve patient care.
  • Participate in work groups, peer review committees, and department learning activities.
  • Maintain and implement current knowledge of up‑to‑date medical advances.
  • Ensure electronic medical record accuracy with entries in progress notes of the Veteran for medical, legal, quality, and financial purposes.
  • Provide appropriate consultative evaluation, treatment, and recommendations with a high degree of professionalism, empathy, and avoid any disruptive or unprofessional behavior.
  • Comply with all VA and facility directives, policies, and established protocols for inpatient medicine and care of veterans.
  • Comply with the hand‑off communication policy—ensure medication reconciliation and a thorough, warm hand‑off for patients.
  • Provide and lead with respectful and compassionate communication with patients and family members to educate them on medical conditions.
  • Demonstrate competent proficiency in bedside procedural skills—thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, central line placement, PICC line placement, NG tube placement.
  • If academic affiliation is maintained, supervise medical students.
