Job Description Summary

The Chief Administrative Officer / Chief Nursing Executive (CAO/CNE) is a dual‑role executive leader responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of nursing services and administrative functions across the academic healthcare system. The role ensures the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centered care while advancing academic, research, and clinical integration, and drives innovation, operational excellence, and workforce engagement.

Position Summary and Purpose

The CAO/CNE serves as a key member of the executive team and a driver of operational and academic integration across all care settings.

Essential Functions

  • Provide strategic direction for nursing practice, education, and research across the system.
  • Ensure clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and evidence‑based care delivery.
  • Foster a culture of professional development, shared governance, and nursing leadership.
  • Champion initiatives that improve patient outcomes, safety, and experience.
  • Lead operational and administrative functions including clinical operations, support services, and strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with academic partners to align clinical operations with educational and research missions.
  • Drive performance improvement, operational efficiency, and financial stewardship.
  • Oversee workforce planning, talent development, and succession strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison between clinical operations and academic leadership to support interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Represent nursing and administrative interests in system‑wide planning and decision‑making.
  • Lead cross‑functional initiatives to enhance care delivery, patient experience, and organizational culture.
  • Mentor and develop senior nursing and administrative leaders.
  • Participate in executive governance, strategic planning, and board‑level discussions.
  • Ensure alignment with organizational mission, values, and strategic goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Master’s degree in nursing, administration, education, business, or a related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in nursing and healthcare administration.

Licensure: Active RN license to practice in Kentucky.

Computer Skills
