Job Description

JOB SUMMARY : The Principal Engineer serves as a key technical contributor and advisor who consults with all business units on engineering and other technical activities. The position acts as a technical consultant utilizing advanced expertise to assess and recommend best practices, process improvements, cost savings, and workplace safety enhancements. The Principal Engineer possesses discipline-specific expertise and industry experience to evaluate project plans, anticipate potential issues, and provide solutions for complex projects. This role also guides and mentors less experienced staff and advises company leadership. Typical services include short-circuit and coordination studies, protective relay settings, protection and control system design (including one-line diagrams, AC & DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams), power system modeling on platforms such as ASPEN OneLiner, and power system disturbance analysis for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide expert advice and counsel, utilizing extensive knowledge of engineering design, principles, practices, and project management.
  • Suggest and implement innovative, cost-effective solutions for complex, hazardous, or critical problems.
  • Review and provide technical input on internal regulatory compliance documentation.
  • Serve as project manager or technical lead for complex projects.
  • Offer opinions on issues related to corporate strategy and business unit initiatives.
  • Act as a technical expert, provide written testimony, and serve as a key witness in legal and legislative proceedings.
  • Provide technical commentary on pending legislation affecting company operations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with manufacturers, vendors, utilities, and consulting firms.
  • Mentor project team members and junior staff.
  • Participate in trade shows, conferences, workshops, seminars, and other educational events.
  • Recommend and justify engineering projects to improve operational efficiencies, reduce failures, enhance system restoration, extend equipment lifespan, and lower costs.
  • Evaluate engineering alternatives and identify optimal solutions for the electric power system.
  • Conduct root-cause analyses and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Provide direction and technical support for digital computer programs, including power quality, fault and system coordination studies, relay software, relay event analysis, and arc flash analysis.
  • Develop detailed drawings for relaying single lines, protective relay schemes, low voltage equipment, and control system connections.
  • Maintain and improve relationships with internal and external customers, monitoring and acting to enhance these relationships.
  • Coordinate with government agencies for permits and authorizations.
  • Perform all work safely and efficiently.
