Overview

Autonomous Vehicle Technician – Based in San Francisco with travel out of state. Pay range: $40.00 to $65.00 per hour.

As a Traveling Fleet Service Technician, you will be responsible for the triage, proactive monitoring, and comprehensive operational support of our diverse vehicle fleets deployed across Core Market, Market Entry, and specialized Weather testing environments. Your contributions will help identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues swiftly, minimize downtime, and maximize data collection from our test vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Test Fleet Triage & Monitoring: act as the primary technical and service-related point of contact for issues arising from vehicles in Core Market, Market Entry, and Weather Test programs; provide expert guidance and support.
• Initial Diagnosis and Triage: perform initial diagnosis and triage of reported vehicle issues, remotely or on-site, to determine severity, identify root causes, and establish effective resolution paths.
• Proactive Vehicle Health Monitoring: monitor vehicle health, performance data, and operational status across assigned test fleets using diagnostic tools and fleet management software to anticipate issues.
• Cross-Functional Coordination: coordinate with engineering teams, remote support personnel, and local field teams to ensure timely troubleshooting and resolution of faults and discrepancies.
• Operational Support & Reporting: provide regular updates and detailed reports to internal stakeholders on test fleet health metrics, issue trends, and field support activities; identify opportunities for process improvements.
• Non-Travel Week Responsibilities: lead or support vehicle upfitting for expanding markets and provide direct support to Owned & Operated (O&O) markets as needed.

Qualifications

• Automotive Technical Expertise: extensive experience in automotive diagnostics, repair, and fleet maintenance (e.g., Master Technician level or equivalent).
• Fleet Management and Leadership Experience: experience in fleet management, field service coordination, or technical support lead roles.
• In-depth Vehicle Systems Knowledge: strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and software components; experience with Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) is highly desirable.
• Problem-Solving: excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills with a methodical approach.
• Organizational & Time Management: ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Communication: strong written and verbal communication skills for interaction with field technicians, engineering teams, and management.
• Software Proficiency: proficiency with diagnostic tools, fleet management software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Independent Decision-Making: able to work independently with sound judgment under pressure.
• Travel Flexibility: willing to travel domestically up to 50%–75% of the time, sometimes on short notice.
• Driving Requirements: valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Educational Background (Optional but Valued): Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
