Responsibilities
- This position involves, under supervision, installing, inspecting, testing, altering, maintaining, and repairing lighting and other electrical systems in MTA New York City Transit facilities (such as subway tunnels and elevated structures, bus depots and repair shops, subway car yards and barns, and other MTA buildings), keeping records, driving motor vehicles, and performing related work.
- Maintain safety and comply with rules related to working on or near train tracks with live high voltage equipment, outdoor work in all weather conditions, ladder use on trackways, hearing warnings, working on elevated structures, driving/loading/unloading trucks, and lifting heavy material and equipment.
How To Qualify
Internal Candidates: This position is open to each employee of MTA New York City Transit that is permanently (not provisionally) employed in the title of Transit Electrical Helper working in Lighting Maintenance for not less than one year; and is not otherwise ineligible.
External Candidates and other MTA Employees: You must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of a four-year full-time apprenticeship in the electrical, electronic, or electro-mechanical trade recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or any state apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or
- Three years of electrical experience installing, maintaining, and repairing lighting systems, conduit work, wiring, and fixtures. At least two years must be at the journey-level. One year of non-journey level experience may be substituted with education as follows:
- Graduation from a trade school or technical school with a major in electrical, electronic, or electro-mechanical technology (minimum 600 hours); or
- Graduation from a vocational high school with a major in electrical, electronic, or electro-mechanical technology; or
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an AAS degree or higher in electrical, electronic, or electro-mechanical technology, or a closely related field.
If you have qualifying part-time experience, it will be credited on a prorated basis.
Some examples of unacceptable experience include: superintendent of residential or commercial buildings; electronic bench technician; repair of home appliances; salespersons of lighting products.
The vocational/technical/ trade school or college must be appropriately accredited.

Requirements To Be Promoted Or Appointed
Driver License Requirement: You must have a valid motor vehicle driver license in New York State. A Learner Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) must be obtained within 90 days of promotion or appointment, and a Class B CDL must be maintained for the duration of employment. Specific waivers may apply for military/National Guard service through the New York DMV.
Drug Screening Requirement: You must pass a drug screen and be subject to random tests for the duration of employment. A positive test or refusal may require SAP evaluation and treatment as per federal law for safety-sensitive positions.
Medical Requirement: Medical guidelines exist to determine if you can perform essential functions; reasonable accommodation will be provided where appropriate.
Residency: New York City residency is not required.
English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English.
