Overview

Position: Certified Air Traffic Control (ATC) Instructor II. This is a hands-on role delivering high-quality classroom and lab-based training to a wide variety of students, including developmental air traffic controllers and certified professional controllers (CPC). The successful candidate will have strong teaching and classroom management skills, a student-focused drive for continuous improvement, and solid technical knowledge of current ATC automation, simulation systems, and procedures. This senior position also provides mentoring for students and other instructors and contribute to curriculum design and development.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality classroom and lab-based training to developmental air traffic controllers and CPCs.
  • Demonstrate excellent teaching/platform skills, effective classroom management, and a student-focused approach for continuous improvement.
  • Mentor students and other instructors; contribute to curriculum design and development.
  • Interface effectively with FAA personnel at all levels to ensure training is responsive to local needs and maintains high quality.
  • Ensure training materials and delivery meet local requirements and standards.

Competencies And Skills

  • Knowledgeable about current practices in Air Traffic Control and the current state of the NAS.
  • Instructor II trainees must be classroom certified by Facility Technical Liaison (FTL) within 60 calendar days after reporting for duty.
  • Laboratory certification: trainees must have knowledge and skills for each laboratory (radar, non-radar, etc.) and must pass a FAA knowledge test for each sector with at least 70% score; tests graded by the Facility Technical Liaison.
  • Laboratory certification required within first 120 days of duty.
  • Ability to interface effectively with FAA personnel at all levels to ensure local training is comprehensive and high quality.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and outstanding communication skills.
  • Ability to work productively with a wide range of people and co-workers.

Requirements

  • Experience and Education: Instructor II must have a minimum of five (5) years of recent experience as a Certified Professional Controller in an FAA ATC facility, in the ATC option for which application is made.
  • Experience at a like-type and like or higher-level facility.
  • Instructor experience in both classroom and simulator laboratory (procedural and radar) required.
  • Prior (or current) OJT Instructor (OJTI) certification with at least 3+ years in that role is required.
  • Operational experience with ATC simulators including scenario design and pseudo/remote pilot operations for systems such as SYDIM, AT Coach, and TSS is a plus.
  • Curriculum design and development experience is desired.
  • ATC โ€œArea Knowledgeโ€ and local facility-level experience is desired.
