What You Need to Know

Job Summary: Generally responsible for performing all aspects for complete design of complex civil/structural engineering assignments. This work will be performed under general supervision as a part of an on-site team in Kingsport, TN. This role is a full-time, long-term opportunity as part of Hargrove’s Technical Services team providing a "One Team" culture. Relocation support may be available for those who qualify. This position requires experience with AISC, ACI, steel structures (pipe racks and process structures), concrete foundations and concrete structures.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.
  • Familiarity with project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
  • Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine the simplest, most efficient approach to solving engineering tasks.
  • Producing estimate level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the level of the estimate.
  • Producing detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction; calculations are prepared for checking by others and for use by drafters/designers as deliverables when required.
  • Producing designs with efficient use of construction materials, focusing on ease of construction and meeting client expectations.
  • Checking calculations for accuracy and conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
  • Assisting the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems; furnishing sketches and details necessary for engineering drawings.
  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth information flow for timely project completion.
  • Advising the senior engineer on design or scope changes identified.
  • Assisting engineers in developing scopes, drawings, and specifications into a package for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.
  • Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for civil/structural input.
  • Developing construction specifications and reviewing fabrication drawings and submittals for conformance.
  • Performing fieldwork to gather data and support construction activities.
  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
  • Leading small to large teams in coordinating civil/structural efforts and managing scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Identifying and developing work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support; providing leadership to ensure communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing progress and quality of civil/structural work.

Ideal Background

Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university; structural coursework required for structural engineering positions.

Registration: Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred.

Experience: 6+ years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural engineering.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge and application of the International Building Code and associated standards (ASCE, AISC, ACI, etc.).
  • Expertise with civil/structural analysis software and interpreting results.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques for engineering, design and construction of process/manufacturing projects.
  • Ability to lead a small to large team to deliver on commitments.
  • Ability to present Hargrove services convincingly.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or both).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Virtual team skills and the ability to provide interoffice execution leadership and support.

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.
