Husch Blackwell LLP is a national law firm with multiple locations across the United States, dedicated to our clients and the industries they serve.

We have an immediate opening in our Kansas City office for an Education Litigation Associate with three to five years of experience , including federal judicial clerkship experience, preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience with all aspects of state and federal education litigation and administrative proceedings, including experience defending constitutional claims under 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983 against governmental entities and governmental officials. Familiarity with immunity defenses, such as qualified immunity and Eleventh Amendment immunity is essential. Experience handling substantive claims that involve free speech, freedom of religion, due process, sex discrimination and harassment, race discrimination and harassment, and disability discrimination is preferred.

The candidate should demonstrate exceptional judgment, the ability to effectively handle multiple projects, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to articulate legal strategies and courses of action. Candidates should have an active Missouri and Kansas bar license or commit to obtaining both as soon as possible. We look for proactive, dynamic, and entrepreneurial individuals with varied backgrounds, interests, and experience for a diverse candidate pool.

Responsibilities

  • Handle all aspects of state and federal education litigation and administrative proceedings.
  • Defend constitutional claims under 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983 against governmental entities and officials.
  • Manage matters involving immunity defenses, including qualified immunity and Eleventh Amendment immunity.
  • Address substantive claims involving free speech, freedom of religion, due process, and various forms of discrimination and harassment.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of education litigation experience (federal judicial clerkship preferred).
  • Experience with state and federal education litigation and administrative proceedings.
  • Active Missouri and Kansas bar license or commitment to obtaining both as soon as possible.
  • Excellent academic credentials and strong writing skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, exercise judgment, and articulate legal strategies.
