Position: Attorney I

Location: Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina

Responsibilities

• Represents the agency in defense of civil lawsuits, including investigation, case preparation, trial preparation and appeals.
• Handles complex and/or sensitive litigation; represents the agency before the State Personnel Grievance Committee and in appeals.
• Works with associated attorneys in outside counsel cases, providing background information, case analysis and relevant law.
• Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials and other agencies on interpretation of state and federal laws, agency policy and procedures.
• Reviews agency policy; develops new policy to comply with relevant statutes and case law.
• Responds to correspondence from attorneys, court officials and state agencies.
• Conducts independent legal research and works independently in performance of all of the above.

Qualifications

• A Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
• Membership in the South Carolina Bar and completion of rule requirements within six (6) months of employment.
• Completion of the State Bar's 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
