Overview

The Farmer’s Dog is hiring a Lead Counsel, Commercial to join our fast-growing Legal Department. They will report to the Assistant General Counsel and work closely with stakeholders across the company to manage day-to-day legal and compliance needs. This is a high-impact role for a highly motivated attorney with a passion for law and dogs.

How You'll Make An Impact

  • Serve as a key member of The Farmer’s Dog legal group, providing proactive and practical guidance to internal business stakeholders.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for drafting, negotiating, finalizing and advising on a variety of agreements, including SaaS, vendor, technology, operations, product, social media and other commercial agreements.
  • Partner with other legal team members on contract reviews, oversight, and performance management.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and implement comprehensive legal strategies, policies, and procedures to manage and mitigate business and legal risk.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and their impact on contracts, including navigating privacy and new technologies.
  • Liaise with external counsel in a responsible and cost-effective manner.
  • Contribute to the legal team’s efforts to build, improve and operationalize internal processes, workflows, best practices, and commercial templates.
  • Provide support on other legal matters as needed.

Qualifications

  • You have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to the NY bar.
  • 8+ years (post-law school) of relevant legal experience, with law firm experience required. Big Law and in-house experience preferred. Experience in the direct-to-consumer, e-commerce, and/or pet space is a plus.
  • Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience reviewing and advising on commercial contracts, particularly SaaS and vendor agreements. Experience with DPAs, privacy-related matters and artificial intelligence is a plus.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to weigh business risk against legal risk with stakeholders.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; self-starter who can prioritize and work independently and as part of a growing team.
  • Flexibility and proactive problem-solving with a track record of understanding business needs and delivering creative solutions.
  • Proficient with Google Suite; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Love dogs.

Compensation

For this role the anticipated base compensation range is $215,000 - $235,000 USD annually, with a robust market-competitive package of base and equity. In addition to base pay, you will receive equity ownership in the company. The range reflects NYC market data and may vary if applying outside the NYC area.
