Job Description

Purpose of Job: Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Chief Academic & Accountability Officer (CAO) has primary authority and accountability for the Kansas City Public Schools’ (KCPS) academic support services as well as the academic performance of all schools. This position drives the educational performance of KCPS, providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the KCPS curriculum, instruction, research and assessment, school improvement initiatives, including the Missouri School Improvement Plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Builds and supports a high-performance educational team.
• Develops and maintains clear and inclusive decision-making processes.
• Identifies and implements effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment policies.
• Balances educational consistency with appropriate autonomy at schools.
• Supports KCPS and school leaders to design and implement school improvement plans.
• Develops and oversees a world-class professional development program for teachers.
• Sets priorities and measurable goals and effectively manages KCPS resources.
• Leads cross-functional teams to implement operational policies.
• Oversees the development of partnerships with educational and community organizations.
• Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Monitors new and changing laws and regulations affecting the school system.
• Accomplishes all goals and objectives outlined in the Missouri School Improvement Plan.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in education.
• Hold or eligible to hold appropriate Missouri Certification.
• Ten or more years of progressive education administrative experience.
• Demonstrated success leading strategic educational initiatives.
• Demonstrated knowledge of research-based current curriculum and instructional practices.
• Effective communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills.
