Job Description – Genetic Counselor II W4)

Overview

Genetic Counselor II will provide genetic counseling services to patients through CNMC on site or at designated outreach centers. Responsibilities include obtaining medical and family histories, reviewing pertinent medical records, counseling families regarding diagnosis, medical findings, natural history, inheritance patterns, and writing counseling letters when indicated. Involvement in student supervision and promotion of genetic disease awareness. Also triage questions from administrative staff, outside hospitals, and physicians.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an ABGC/ACGC accredited genetic counseling training program (Required)
  • Board certified (Required)
  • Minimum 4 years experience as a genetic counselor (Required)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in student supervision (Preferred)
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Foster student trainee growth

Language preference: Arabic

Functional Accountabilities – Patient Services

  • Obtain medical and family history and review records
  • Perform risk assessment and discuss inheritance patterns and recurrence risks
  • Conduct psychosocial assessment and provide support, counsel on testing options, explore risks and benefits
  • Document counseling session notes for family, medical records, referring physician
  • Provide written information about support groups, resources, facilitate referrals, respond timely to questions
  • Triage questions from staff, hospitals, physicians

Advocacy

  • Promote genetic disease awareness

Research

  • Review current literature and guidelines for upcoming patients
  • Provide up‑to‑date information regarding clinical trials and research related to patient care

Education

  • Remain up to date with current genetic literature
  • Attend regional and national meetings and disseminate information learned at genetic counselor meetings
  • Actively participate in monthly journal club
  • Achieve genetic counseling board certification
  • Permit students/trainees to shadow daily responsibilities
