Job Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and is responsible for performing toxicological analyses, including screening and confirmatory tests for alcohol, drugs and other substances, participation in research projects, assisting in the operation of the forensic toxicology laboratory and performs other related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Forensic Toxicologist supports the quality control program by assisting in manufacturing and validating controls, tracking quality control data, and updating standard operating procedures. Supports the quality control program by assisting in tracking pipettes, performing in-house pipette calibrations, and monitoring overall laboratory safety practices. Assists with breath alcohol program (when needed). Performs a limited range of toxicological examinations for drugs and alcohol including commonly used illegal, prescription and non-prescription drugs and other selected poisonous substances. Performs complete and definitive toxicological analysis of body tissues and fluids to determine the existence of substances that cause toxicity or changes in human performance.

The incumbent performs complete toxicological examinations on forensic postmortem cases, driving‑under‑the‑influence (DUI) cases and drug‑facilitate‑sexual‑assault (DFSA) cases. Maintains equipment and instruments and assures integrity of data by servicing and calibrating equipment and instruments and performing quality control testing. Accessions samples, completes forms to report test results and ensures compliance with chain of evidence and specimen storage procedures.

Qualifications and Education

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in toxicology or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology and one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-09 grade. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
