Position Summary
The Director of Quality provides leadership and strategic oversight for all quality assurance and testing operations across the manufacturing organization. This role ensures compliance with customer, industry, and regulatory requirements while driving continuous improvement in product quality, test accuracy, and manufacturing processes. The position directly oversees the Electrical Test Department, responsible for validating systems prior to shipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Quality Leadership
- Develop and implement a company-wide quality strategy aligned with operational and customer objectives.
- Lead, coach, and mentor quality engineers, inspectors, and electrical test technicians.
- Establish a culture of quality ownership, accountability, and proactive problem solving.
- Serve as the senior management representative for all internal, customer, and third-party audits.
Quality Management System (QMS)
- Maintain and continuously improve the ISO 9001-certified Quality Management System.
- Ensure that quality procedures, work instructions, and test documentation are up-to-date and effectively implemented.
- Lead internal audit programs and management reviews to verify system compliance and effectiveness.
Electrical Test Oversight
- Manage the Electrical Test Department, ensuring test coverage, accuracy, and compliance with customer requirements.
- Develop and validate test procedures, including continuity, hipot, insulation resistance, functional, and load testing.
- Partner with Engineering to integrate design-for-test (DFT) and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles into new products.
Product & Process Quality
- Lead root cause analysis (8D, A3, DMAIC) and corrective/preventive action activities.
- Establish in-process inspection and first-article verification standards.
- Monitor and improve key metrics: first-pass yield, test failure rate, DPPM, scrap/rework cost, and customer complaint trends.
- Act as the primary contact for customer quality issues and audits.
- Lead supplier qualification, incoming inspection criteria, and ongoing performance tracking for electrical and mechanical components.
- Ensure rapid response and robust containment for any field failures or warranty issues.
- Coordinate with Sales and Engineering to interpret and document customer-specific test and inspection requirements.
- Implement Lean Six Sigma methods to reduce variation and waste within production and testing processes.
- Promote data-driven decision making through SPC, quality dashboards, and trend analysis.
- Champion the use of mistake-proofing (poka-yoke) and advanced inspection technologies (e.g., vision systems, automated test data logging).
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelorβs degree in Electrical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or related technical field required.
- 10+ years of quality experience in an electrical assembly or control system manufacturing environment.
- 5+ years of leadership experience in a quality management or test engineering role.
- Proven success with ISO 9001 (IATF 16949 or AS9100 a plus).
- Certifications such as CQE, CQA, or CSSBB strongly preferred.
- Deep understanding of electrical testing methodologies (continuity, hipot, resistance, functional).
- Familiar with UL, CE, CSA, IPC/WHMA-A-620, and NFPA 79 standards.
- Proficiency in statistical tools (Minitab, JMP, or equivalent) and ERP/QMS software.
- Strong background in PFMEA, control plans, process audits, and supplier management.
- Experience developing automated test systems or data acquisition integration a plus.

- First-pass yield and electrical test pass rate.

- Audit performance and non-conformance closure rate.
- Supplier quality performance and defect trends.
- Scrap and rework reduction.
- On-time test completion and data traceability compliance.
