Member of Board of Directors - Local Only
The Board of Directors ("Board") is legally and ethically responsible for all activities of the organization. The Board determines how the organization will carry out its mission through long and short‑range planning, adopts an annual budget, provides fiscal oversight, recruits and develops board members, hires and evaluates the CEO, and evaluates its own and the organization’s performance.
Responsibilities
- Understands and promotes the organization’s vision, mission, and values.
- Familiar with the organization’s programs, policies, and operations.
- Attends board meetings and appropriate committee meetings.
- Actively serves on at least one committee and offers to take on special assignments.
- Reviews agendas and supporting documents prior to meetings.
- Makes an annual contribution to the organization commensurate with ability.
- Participates in fundraising activities and special events.
- Keeps current on community healthcare issues and developments in program areas.
- Strictly adheres to conflict‑of‑interest policies.
- Strictly adheres to confidentiality policies.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must speak English.
Time Commitment
- Attend and actively participate in at least 75% of board meetings (12 monthly board meetings, approximately 2 hours each, on the 1st Monday of the month, except December).
- Attend and actively participate in committee meetings and related work (1–3 hours per month as determined by the committee).
- Attend the annual planning retreat (1 day).
- Attend special events such as fundraisers and groundbreaking ceremonies.
- Attend new board member orientation (approx. 3–4 hours).
- Meet with potential donors/funders to make a case for funding the organization (approx. 4 hours annually).
- Interact appropriately with diverse populations and different community groups, being sensitive to multicultural issues.
Financial and Resource Development Expectations
- Make an annual gift "commensurate or significant according to your circumstance" to the organization (to achieve 100% board giving).
- Sell tickets to fundraising events.
- Recruit sponsors, as needed.
- Identify and cultivate potential donors.
