Position Overview

The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” and developing a high‑performing team that consistently delivers top‑line sales growth while maintaining a focus on animal welfare. The GM leads a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center.

Position Responsibilities

People

• Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
• Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
• Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly partners.
• Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement.
• Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork and inclusion.
• Ensure quick and courteous service to all guests.
• Responsible for all partner performance management.
• Demonstrate a continuous improvement mindset.

Performance

• Meet or exceed goals related to sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
• Schedule and adjust labor hours & payroll to maximize productivity.
• Review and interpret financial and operational reporting.
• Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve.
• Market the Pet Care Center and oversee community events.

Process

• Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.
• Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed, and stocked.
• Complete accounting, inventory and payroll paperwork timely.
• Maintain the center’s appearance and safety procedures.
• Protect pets & merchandise minimizing loss.
• Ensure opening/closing procedures are followed.
• Maintain professional image, appearance, and cleanliness.

Other Essential Duties

• Model inspiring leadership and selling behaviors.
• Promote safety and ensure policies are followed.
• Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas.
• Prioritize talent development and bench strength.
• Engage and be present, representing Petco’s brand.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED and proficiency in business & finance, analysis, problem solving, people development, guest service.
• Excellent communication and computer skills.
• Three or more years of management experience; retail preferred.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Professional appearance and a genuine interest in animals.
• Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle.

Supervisory Responsibility

The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners.

Work Environment

Job duties conducted indoors with occasional merchandise handling, standing, bending, kneeling, moving up to 50 pounds. Limited travel required.

Contacts

Continual contact with public, other departments, distribution centers, support centers. External contact for merchandise returns, orders, repairs, events.
