Project Archaeologist / Cultural Resources Specialist

Arcadis is seeking a mid-to-senior level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist within our cultural resources practice in California. As part of this role, you will work with the National Cultural Resources team to develop strategies to grow cultural resources work for specific clients in California.

You will serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) and provide senior oversight for junior staff, as well as assist with the management of client‑specific large programs and projects. You will also provide quality assurance planning and review for the execution of cultural resources work in California. Arcadis is specifically looking for someone with planning and permitting experience for linear infrastructure in California and knowledge of California permits at the federal and state level.

Role Accountabilities

As a mid‑ or senior‑level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist, you will apply your technical and business knowledge to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address current and potential project issues. You will be a key cultural team member who interacts with project managers, directors, and principals and work as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team. You will provide supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to junior‑level staff whenever appropriate.

Technical responsibilities include serving as a PI for projects in California, managing archaeological field staff and crews (including subcontractors), conducting or leading field assessments, and preparing technical analysis and documents. You will use GPS systems and should be capable of walking and conducting fieldwork for long hours, carrying supplies up to 40 pounds, and traveling up to 25% of the time.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology.
  • Master’s degree in archaeology or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in cultural resources management, with a combination of field‑ and office‑based experience and roles.
  • At least 2 years of experience completing projects for linear utilities in California at a PI‑level.
  • Previous experience in cultural resources planning to support the construction, reconstruction or maintenance of electric and/or gas transmission facilities or similar linear infrastructures (e.g., water, sewer, oil and gas).
  • Experience working with federal land management agencies (BLM, USFS, NPS, etc.) and state agencies.
  • Strong knowledge of cultural resources management and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
  • Demonstrated NEPA/CEQA experience.

Salary range: $88,580 – $132,870. Actual salaries vary based on experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
