Position Overview:
The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is seeking a motivated candidate to serve as the School Psychologist for their Illinois Youth Center (IYC) located in Chicago. The ideal candidate will have previous psychological experience in an educational setting, a positive mindset, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of at‑risk youth in our care. The incumbent will complete student evaluations, implement behavioral testing/scoring, and conduct group and individual counseling. The role includes serving as the school psychologist for the assigned facility and assisting with special education evaluations and re-evaluations, while fostering an environment that promotes growth and opportunity for the youth in our care. Essential Functions:
- Participates in the IDJJ School District #428 as a liaison for home-school re-entry student conferences, acts as an IEP team member, and helps determine appropriate instructional programming.
- Administers and scores psychological evaluations for special education eligibility.
- Serves as Special Education Evaluator for the Central Region of School District #428.
- Conducts individual and group counseling.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the above duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires the School Psychologist Endorsement from the Illinois State Board of Education.
- Requires a master’s degree in psychology or educational psychology from a recognized college or university approved by the State Board of Education, plus one school year of supervised professional psychological experience with children of school age.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
- Extensive knowledge of the theories and assumptions underlying the field of psychology is preferred.
- Experience working with school-aged children displaying deviant behaviors is preferred.
- Ability to give, score, and interpret psychological tests and behavioral measures is preferred.
- Ability to prepare complex written and oral reports is preferred.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be able to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Must be able to pass an IDJJ/IDOC Drug Screening.
- Requires travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
- Requires attendance at seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry-related topics relevant to the job duties.

The department provides services through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety across five youth facilities. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and manages aftercare for about 500 youth in various Illinois communities.
