Job Overview
The Director of Clinical Engineering is responsible for providing oversight and governance over all functions related to safety testing, utilizing, repairing and maintaining biomedical patient care equipment across the health system. Oversees evaluation, procurement, implementation and fiscally sound lifecycle management of patient monitoring, diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment and systems throughout all care delivery environments. Accountable for successfully and continuously improving the enterprise-wide clinical technology management program.
Responsibilities
- Develops strategic plan, annual goals and performance metrics for reporting functions. Develops and implements plans for aligning reporting functions to operational vision and strategy of the organization. Reviews and approves annual work plans developed by reporting leaders.
- Participates in leadership activities that contribute to the achievement of goals and objectives. Reviews and approves changes to internal processes. Evaluates processes, programs and overall departmental performance, as well as identifies and implements related improvements. Serves as a champion of enterprise-wide culture and influencing culture change to support operational objectives.
- Oversees and manages communications to the enterprise on departmental and/or program strategies, projects and other initiatives. Maintains effective working relationships with peers across the enterprise.
- Assigns and reviews annual goals and provides development opportunities for team leaders and team members. Evaluates performance of assigned team leaders and team members and provides continuous feedback. Accountable for managing entire employee lifecycle of team, including hiring, development, performance management, discipline and termination.
- Accountable for biomedical equipment repair services and related contract management, as well as managing capital and operating budgets. Manages, directs, and allocates resources to oversee effective and efficient operations.
- Directs best‑practices projects and enterprise‑wide change management efforts to ensure continuous regulatory compliance of mission‑critical equipment and systems, collaborating with leaders and stakeholders across the health system. Manages process improvement and quality assurance activities. Ensures biomedical equipment compliance and testing metrics are documented and in alignment with regulatory requirements.
- Provides guidance with biomedical technology assessments, capital purchasing, equipment safety and accountability for managing total cost of biomedical equipment ownership. Participates in negotiations of major maintenance, repair and parts contracts. Tracks data to proactively assess and mitigate risk associated with utilization and maintenance of biomedical equipment.
- Collaborates with information technology related teams on network connectivity and infrastructure for biomedical equipment.
- Accountable for developing, updating and implementing all related policies and procedures in conjunction with organizational standards and industry best‑practices.
- Proactively engages biomedical equipment organizations, peer institutions and manufacturers as part of a comprehensive quality improvement program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of and experience with Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS), Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE), State of Colorado and U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) biomedical device‑related accreditation and licensing requirements.
- Knowledge of and experience with UL, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electrical Code (NEC), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and other national and international technical standards.
- Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate expertise in electrical, biomedical and mechanical engineering, computer systems, information technology networks/infrastructure and human physiology.
- Highly skilled in strategic planning, project management, change management and program evaluation.
- Highly skilled in implementing new systems, processes, technology and equipment, including developing and delivering related training.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biomedical/clinical engineering or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of seven years of equipment management related experience in the biomedical or healthcare field in addition to a minimum of three (3) years of previous supervisory/leadership experience.
Equivalency: Minimum of eleven (11) years of equipment management related experience in the biomedical field inclusive of supervisory/leadership experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Certification(s): Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), a Clinical Engineer (CCE) and/or in Radiology Equipment Services (CRES) is required at the time of hire.
