Principal Mechanical Air-Cooling Product Engineer, DCE – Mechanical Products & Services (MPS)
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we keep the cloud running and support all AWS data centers with servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment to ensure customers have continual access to innovation.
In this role you will join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles to deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong engineering judgment in designing highly reliable air handling systems, psychrometric analysis, and air-side economization strategies for mission-critical facilities.
- Direct innovative, high-performance teams developing next-generation direct evaporative cooling solutions and advanced chiller plants, managing facility thermal loads exceeding 100 MW+ while achieving mechanical PUE metrics below 1.05.
- Apply data-driven approaches using CFD analysis, thermal modeling software, and real-time sensor data to optimize airflow patterns, static pressure control, and air-side heat transfer.
- Lead technical reviews of cooling system designs, maintenance procedures, and reliability improvements targeting +99.999% availability.
- Use extensive experience in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, fluid mechanics, and ASHRAE standards, focusing on evaporative cooling technologies.
- Provide strategic direction for multiple products deployed globally in new and existing facilities exceeding 250 MW+ across data center campuses.
- Communicate complex cooling systems architecture through detailed control schemes, psychrometric analysis, and system performance specifications.
- Collaborate with global suppliers and support global operations, incorporating multi-stakeholder feedback to build the global knowledge base.
- Travel approximately 30 % of the time, including domestic and occasional international visits to AWS offices, data centers, suppliers, vendors, and product validation sites.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- 7 + years of experience in data center design, product development, HVAC design, or related product development.
- 5 + years of experience leading or working closely with high-performing teams of 5‑25 associates and delivering measurable results.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- 10 + years of experience designing mechanical cooling systems for data centers.
- Demonstrated ability to drive strategy and manage teams in ambiguous environments.
- Deep understanding of cooling infrastructure in data center environments.
