Salary range posted by the department: $10,588.00 - $14,547.00 A and $11,105.00 - $15,263.00 B. Responsibilities
Presides over hearings in CDSS and DHCS program areas, which may include CalWORKs, CalFresh, Medi-Cal, IHSS, Scope of Benefits, Resource Family Approval, and Covered California, among others. Handles all types of hearings, including complex and/or sensitive cases. Interprets and applies provisions of federal and state statutes, regulations, and department policies. Rules on objections and subpoena requests, addresses postponement requests, sets continued hearings, and manages other case management issues to maintain proper flow of cases assigned by the Supervising Administrative Law Judge (SALJ). Submits timely and legally correct final and proposed decisions as delegated, in alignment with SHD standards. May serve as reviewer of proposed decisions, and/or as duty judge who rules on pre-hearing matters (expedited hearings, bifurcations, subpoenas, postponements, reopen requests, etc.). Participates on special projects and attends SHD internal and external meetings as assigned. May become a subject matter expert on CalWORKs, CalFresh, and Medi-Cal cases and provide guidance to other ALJs.
