Position Duties & Responsibilities
The following statements outline the general scope of work for this contracted position. They are not exhaustive and do not encompass all responsibilities, duties, and skills associated with the role. The contractor may be required to perform additional tasks as deemed necessary by United Way or project requirements.

  • Develop and execute a proactive volunteer recruitment strategy, aligned with VHQ (Volunteer Headquarters) initiatives, to inspire and mobilize diverse volunteers through in-person, virtual, print, and digital channels.
  • Identify and activate new recruitment markets beyond traditional audiences—including schools, places of worship, retail and hospitality venues, cultural events, and community gatherings—to grow volunteer engagement.
  • Create segmented, action-oriented communications based on audience research to promote volunteer opportunities across a range of media platforms.
  • Serve as a dynamic public representative of United Way and VHQ by initiating real-time engagement with individuals and groups to identify volunteer interests and facilitate sign-ups.
  • Maintain deep working knowledge of the VHQ platform, partner organizations, and available volunteer roles in order to communicate effectively and match interests with opportunities.
  • Collaborate with United Way teams and partners to inform volunteer systems and processes, contribute to the development of a recruitment best practices guide, and support content creation that showcases volunteer impact.
  • Ensure adherence to brand guidelines in all recruitment materials and communications, upholding consistency and visual identity.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, including outreach activities, audience insights, and volunteer recruitment data in line with VHQ procedures.
Qualifications
The contractor should have at least five years of experience in volunteer recruitment, community engagement, or project management, with a demonstrated ability to create compelling and high-quality storytelling across digital and print formats. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Canva, and basic HTML is preferred, along with strong skills in Mac systems, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office tools. Photography and videography experience are considered valuable assets. The contractor must be highly adaptable, detail-oriented, and effective in both written and verbal communication, thriving in a fast-paced environment with ongoing feedback and evolving deadlines.
To successfully fulfill this contracted position, the contractor should be capable of effectively executing each essential job function and be open to being on-site three days a week (Tuesday - Thursday) during these activities.
