Job Description
The Attorney 1 for the West Virginia Department of Transportation will perform legal support duties, answer telephone and written inquiries, conduct legal research, and represent the agency before courts and administrative forums.
The successful candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, be able to work with and maintain confidential information, and have a valid driver's license with a willingness to travel statewide.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide support to Division staff in determining case strategy, developing litigation tactics, research, investigations, and conducting litigation
- Report to the Director and/or Attorney Manager
- Render legal recommendations to the Director and/or Attorney Supervisor
- Use independent judgment in the interpretation and adaption of policies and guidelines
- Represent the agency before administrative forums not requiring law license
- Perform legal work in connection with specialized areas of assignment
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of statutes, court opinions, and Attorney General opinions
- Knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures
- Ability to conduct complex civil and administrative litigation
- Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and court decisions
Minimum Requirements
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate
- No prior experience is required
