The Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for leading the engineering and technical execution of a large project, a number of small projects, or a number of small tasks that support facilities engineering and construction activities for the Nevada National Security Site. Plan, coordinate and manage engineering aspects of schedule, scope and budget of work that includes multiple engineering disciplines and construction for these projects – may include complex coordination with National Laboratories as well as oversight entities. This position requires minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Manager and engineering staff with planning, coordinating, and preparing of designs, procurement documents, specifications, bid evaluations, and award recommendations for equipment. Responsible for the technical design aspects for projects over the entire lifecycle (initiation, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, and closing).
  • Demonstrate managing the engineering design and construction support for projects including but not limited to:
    • Define, plan, execute, monitor, control, and successfully complete the engineering design elements scope.
    • Ensure compliance of engineering deliverables with defined schedule, costs, risks, and quality constraints.
    • Maintain satisfaction of stakeholders by ensuring engineering solutions meet their differing needs and/or expectations.
    • Manage communications related to engineering decisions and progress between project stakeholders and team members.
    • Recommend and coordinate preparation and modifications to designs due to field conditions or adverse situations.
    • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of engineering cost estimates and material takeoffs and ascertain whether the proposed material usage will be adequate for its purpose.
    • Devise integrated solutions to complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions are expected to be comprehensive in technical and business aspects and exhaustive at all levels, including cross-disciplinary engineering considerations.
    • Ensure deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures. Develop new initiatives for additional scopes of engineering work.
  • Interact with Engineering Managers and various departments within the company to ensure that engineering activities and project designs are compliant in all areas.
  • Serve as an advisor to other project personnel, technical staff, and management on technical engineering issues. Provide advice and/or recommendations to management regarding strategic development opportunities using MSTS technologies and capabilities.
  • Mentor entry level engineering staff and other technical personnel in methods, processes, and best practices for project engineering.
  • Participate in project development by helping define customer needs, developing proposals and planning projects that will produce effective outcomes.
  • Work with customers to verify their needs are clearly defined and documented to meet their objectives and ensure engineering decisions are responsive to those needs.
  • Apply knowledge and familiarity in multiple technical disciplines and ingenuity to implement effective technical solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by ABET for Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering; or calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering; or Professional Engineer license.
  • Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience may show deeper technical specialization or cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research may be recognized.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline.
  • Prior Department of Energy complex work experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Past project engineering experience is preferred.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as a team member and leader to ensure task and project success. Project management experience is preferred. PMP certification preferred.
  • The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Work at the Nevada National Security Site may be required in support of these functions.
  • Work schedule is 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review, including checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties require a DOE security clearance. DOE security clearance requires U.S. citizenship and may involve a counterintelligence evaluation.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of illegal drugs will be conducted. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Annual salary range for this position is: $99,340.80 - $149,011.20 . Starting salary is determined based on market value, candidate education and experience, and internal equity.

Location: Losee Road facility, North Las Vegas, NV (with possible travel to NNSS location).
