Performs difficult administrative work supervising the emergency dispatch operation, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Emergency Services. Divisional supervision is exercised over all personnel within the division.

  • Facilitates a safe work environment where employees are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the operation of the emergency dispatch division.
  • Evaluates staff performance; takes personnel action and implements disciplinary actions; counsels staff regarding performance and employee personnel policies.
  • Evaluates equipment needs and coordinates the design, installation, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Coordinates emergency communications with Police, Fire, Sheriff, EMS, and other law enforcement and emergency services personnel within the County.
  • Develops divisional policies and procedures.
  • Develops divisional budget and monitors expenditures.
  • Maintains and applies for FCC licenses.
  • Performs all duties of a dispatcher.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures of operating the communications system; thorough knowledge of the federal and state regulations governing transmission by radio and teletype; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City and County and surrounding area; general knowledge of sheriff, police, fire, and EMS procedures; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to operate all communications equipment; ability to direct the design, installation, and maintenance of communications equipment; ability to speak succinctly; ability to deal courteously with the public under trying conditions.

Bachelor's degree with coursework in communications, or related field, and extensive experience as a telecommunicator including considerable supervisory and management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
